Storey Arms is licensed as an Approved Activity Provider by The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for the Expedition and Residential section of the award. We are authorised to deliver activities for these sections of the award and sign off participants’ achievements.
We work closely with schools and the youth service to deliver training, practice and qualifying elements of the expeditions, at all levels of the award.
We host a Gold Residential DofE each year where participants join and meet others from across the UK for our team based residential event.
Expedition Section
We offer both hill walking and canoeing expeditions at all levels of the Award – Bronze, Silver and Gold.
At present we only work with DofE units – we do not offer Open courses for individuals to join.
The Expedition element includes three sections:
Section |
Bronze |
Silver | Gold |
Training |
1 or 2 days |
2 days |
2 or 3 days |
Practice Expedition |
2 days / 1 night |
3 days / 2 nights |
4 days / 3 nights |
Qualifying Expedition | 2 days / 1 night | 3 days / 2 nights |
4 days / 3 nights |
We can provide any or all of the above sections for your DofE participants. You may want us to provide a complete package or, if you have skills and resources within your team to train your participants, we can provide one or both the expeditions. Alternatively, you can make all the arrangements and we will provide qualified supervising staff and/or assessors.
If you are local to the Storey Arms, the Training section can be carried out as a series of day sessions; otherwise, we recommend a residential weekend to cover the requirements of the award.
We usually hold the Practice and Qualifying Expeditions in the Brecon Beacons and South Wales area but we can use an area that suits your requirements. We can also offer Gold Qualifying expeditions for hill walking in the mountain regions of France.
If you would like to discuss your requirements please call us or send an enquiry form. We will then get back to you as soon as possible.
For more information on the DofE Expedition section visit the DofE website.
Residential Section – Gold Level only
Only the Gold Level of the DofE Award requires a Residential. The DofE explain that:
“You’ll spend five days and four nights taking part in a shared, worthwhile activity with people you’ve never met before. A DofE residential will boost your independence and confidence and is a great way to leave a positive footprint on your life and other people’s.”
Our next Residential Week is usually held during the summer school holidays and is open to participants from around the UK. Contact us for dates and further details.
